Artist’s Biography
Born in 1947 in Kircheim unter Tek, Germany of Lithuanian parents, Gintaras (Ginter) Zemliauskas emigrated to the United States in 1949, settling in New Haven, Connecticut until moving to Southington, Conn in 1974. He is a retired art teacher having taught 40 years in grades 1 through 8 in the towns of Bristol and Southington. Zemliauskas graduated from Southern Connecticut State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education followed by M.S. and 6 year degrees from Central Connecticut State College. His experience as a teacher, having worked with a wide range of age groups and art media, have helped to inspire his own artwork. His artistic style has been particularly influenced by early 20″ century artists Piet Mondrian, Wassilly Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich and Louise Nevelson who shifted focus from traditional realism to expressive, boundary pushing abstraction. Zemliauskas’s latest artworks have been in the style “Geometric Abstraction” a form of non-objective art that uses basic geometric shapes and colors as its primary visual language. His “Minimalist” wooden outdoor sculptures are among the latest to be displayed outdoors in this style.
This is the first solo exhibit for Zemliauskas. During his teaching career he has taken part in several art faculty workshops and displays. He has organized and chaperoned school trips to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim Museum, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, Washington’s National Gallery of Art and the New Britain Museum of American
Ginter is married to former St. Thomas teacher Janet Zemliauskas and is the father to two adult sons, Christopher and Justin. He is a lifelong Dodger fan and avid Conn Husky follower. Among his other hobbies are travel, golf and gardening.
Artist Statement
Over the years my artwork has developed and expanded with hand-on experience as an art stude to that of art educator. I have worked in a variety of disciplines including painting, drawing, print-making, pottery, jewelry, photography, sculpture and stained glass. Presently, my main focus is creating abstract sculptures with wood, a medium that can serve the purpose of both form and function. Th work of artist Louise Nevelson has been an inspiration for me to create in this media.
My working with wood has transformed over time from utilitarian projects such as building a de to designing geometrical wall reliefs and outdoor sculptures. My focus for this exhibit is to display the realism and beauty of the world through the lens of a camera as well as to present the visual sensations of artistic abstraction, both two and three dimensional, which is the end-product of our imagination and creativity.
